Winter Photos

Above the Clouds

by James H. ByrdProtected by Copyscape. Do not copy.

This seems to be one of the coldest Decembers that most people remember experiencing. That can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending upon who you are. For Schweitzer, it is a good thing. The snow is far more persistent than usual, so even though the mountain hasn't gotten any new snow for a while, the groomer zoomers can still get their kicks. Unfortunately, the powder hounds are out of luck for the moment.

If you commute into town from around the county, you are probably ready to see the ice leave the roads. On the other hand, with the winter holidays upon us, the well-preserved blanket of snow helps put everyone into the spirit. I for one would be disappointed not to have a white Christmas.

This week's pictures were taken on a recent skiing journey to Schweitzer. It was good to ascend above the clouds and enjoy some fun in the sun.

12/12/05: Above the clouds: Yes, we've had more "stagnant air" lately. You can see the cloud bank that often hangs over the valley when this happens. Up here on the mountain, we can revel in the sunshine.

12/12/05: More islands in the sky: The same view seems more surreal and remote from the top of Chair 1.

12/12/05: I can see clearly now: From the top of the Great Escape quad, you can see over to the ridge that separates Schweitzer Bowl from Outback Bowl, and then all the way to Montana!

12/12/05: Hazard warning: Taken from Chair 1 beyond the midway unload. Skiers have been carving their way around the hazards. There's plenty of snow to enjoy a good trip, you just have to be cautious if you venture off the groomed runs.

See you next week!
